34 years serving the immigrant community in New York

History

History

LWA was founded in 1990 by Haydee Zambrana and other community women who saw a need to serve Hispanic women and their families in the borough of Queens. Affirming the increasing women’s political and economic force is an important factor of interest to Latin Women in Action’s mission. We celebrate and promote family accomplishments and empowerment while at the same time, challenging disparities between those empowered and the newly arrived in the USA, who need all basic services.

In the last 34 years, Latin Women in Action, Inc also referred as “LWA” has assisted thousands of women and men become aware of their responsibilities in learning their civic responsibilities as they submerge themselves into this society. LWA offers services in education, domestic violence prevention, child abuse prevention, mental health counseling and support, as well as immigration legal services through pro-bono attorneys, and referrals on many other services such as, employment, health, housing, to name a few.The organization has assisted approximately 100,000 women and their families with immigration services, including helping legal residents to become US Citizens, and helped them to register to vote as part of their civic duties. It has assisted hundreds of schools by providing workshops on issues such as parenting, parental involvement, child abuse prevention, bullying, domestic violence, immigrant rights, legal services and much more.
